About Zihuatanejo

Zihuatanejo is an ancient and picturesque fishing village distinguished for the tranquility of its atmosphere and the warmth of its people, in the decade of the 1960's started its tourism awakening thanks to the growing popularity of Acapulco port and the creation of Ixtapa's first-class tourism center, the latter located only 5 kilometers away.

Spanish conquerors arrived at the bay of Ciguatan (Spanish version of the original Indian name of Zihuatan) in the year 1512, when they discovered its use for sending exploration ships and merchandise to the South Pacific, especially fine woods to the Philippines colony, and developed the location's port. However, the small fishing town didn't obtain many benefits from this activity and kept its town status. It is worth mentioning that the era's maps mark the smallest towns with the suffix "“ejo"”, thus the name would later be completed, resulting in the town of Ciguatan-ejo.

The development of the neighboring port of Acapulco gave an impulse to the tourism affluence of the area and shortly after, the creation of the luxurious Ixtapa complex confirmed the new inclination of Zihuatanejo, today one of Mexico's most popular tourism destinations.
