Where to Go / What to Do in Durango

HISTORICAL CENTER
Durango's Historical Center proudly exhibits a unique architecture in Mexico's North by gathering an invaluable mosaic of colonial and contemporary styles through items of great artistic value, such as archeological pieces, sacred art, historical archives and ethnographic collections that reflect the great artistic skills of the ethnic groups that have built this region.

Escarzaga Palace dates from the 19th century and still preserves beautiful murals painted by Francisco Montoya de la Cruz to illustrate some of the most important passages of Durango's history. Casa del Conde del Valle de Suchil was built in the 18th century and is the most impressive colonial house in the city, boasting the beauty of its façade and interiors of baroque style. Casa del Arzobispado's façade shows amazing ornaments on its front gate that were carved by Master Benigno Montoya in 1885 and proudly tells the story of the night when it hosted Pope John Paul II in 1990. The current Rectory of Universidad Juarez del Estado de Durango is found within the beautiful former Jesuit Convent after having served as School, Conciliar Seminar and Civil College in the building that was built during the 18th century.

GOVERNMENT PALACE
Spanish miner Juan Jose de Zambrano, the wealthiest man in the province of New Vizcaya, ordered it built at the end of the 18th century, in a barroque style. It was later acquired for government offices, after Mexico's War of Independence.

It was created in quarry and is two stories high; the first floor has the front gate with arches supported by highly ornamented columns. The second level presents the main balcony with a bell smelted as a replica of the one used in Dolores.

The Call of Independence, ceremony that conmemorates Mexico's Independence, is reenacted here every year. Its muals exhibit paintings created by Francisco Montoya de la Cruz and Ernesto Flores Esquival, regional muralists.

RICARDO CASTRO THEATER
Promoting the city's cultural tourism with the best events, theater plays and concerts, this great building from the 20th century with a quarry facade and sober neoclassic style is outstanding for the elements carved on its front gate and extraordinary decorations on all its balconies, like the one on the main balcony special for showing a medallion with the image of Chopin. Its interior is all in French style and the vestibule exhibits prestigious mural paintings with the most important passages in Durango's history.

FAIRS AND CONVENTIONS CENTER
Within the celebrations for the 443º Anniversary of Durango's Foundation, this beautiful Fairs and Conventions State Center was inaugurated; considered as one of the largest, safest, most comfortable and modern in the country.

Within this new center is the Show Center, a magnificent architectural work for its design, able to hold more than 7,800 spectators and its Palenque, one of the country's most modern, with more than 5,600 seats for enjoying the best shows. Build over an area of 40 hectares; this space is seven times larger than the former convention center.
