About Tepic

Tepic, the always green city, is the capital of the State of Nayarit. Located in the central part of the State, more than 70% of its territory is mountains and the rest is plains and hills. Because of this, its green landscapes and abundant palm tress make it a refreshing colonial city, additionally characterized by its friendly and very courteous population.

Don Francisco de Cortés de San Buenaventura was the first Spaniard to reach Tepic in the year 1525. According to his own story, the Indian town was inhabited by 200 families who dressed in cotton and practiced corn bartering. A few years later, in 1531, Nuño de Guzman, the Spanish conquistador antagonist of Hernan Cortes, obtained a concession from the Crown to populate and control the whole Bajio, for which he decided to found the current territory of Tepic, the town of the Holy Spirit. Only months later, he received orders to rename it Santiago de Compostela.

However, an attack from rebel Indians motivated the then governor to relocate the villa, which currently continues being named Santiago de Compostela. In its former location emerged a new settlement, retaking the Indian name of Tepic.

This time, epidemics gave a new setback to the population of Tepic, most of them died from the mortal diseases and by the year 1612, the town only had 55 men, including Spaniards and Indians.

With the discovery of California Bay, the villa's economy reactivated and since then started to grow in population, attracting people from other parts of Nayarit.

By the mid XVIII century, Tepic was a neoclassic city with parish church, port, hospital in San Jose, Imperial Hotel, current Palacio de Gobierno, the Casa de Ayuntamiento and a cemetery.

The total current population according to the Ayuntamiento del Municipio de Tepic is 265,817 residents; 40% economically active. Although the city still has great deficiency regarding economy and education, its strategic position in the state and the connection with Guadalajara "– Tepic "– Mazatlan "– Nogales highway, give it a strategic advantage in the area.
