About Progreso

The most important and largest sea port in Yucatan is also the State's youngest city, Puerto Progreso. Just founded on the 25th of February 1856 with the consent of then President of Mexico General Ignacio Comonfort, its creation responds to the need of Yucatan to have its sea customs house the closest possible to the capital, the city of Merida.

For its customs vocation since birth, Puerto Progreso was soon raised to the category of city and on the 4th of October 1875 it gained the title it still keeps.

However, currently the arrival of international tourist cruise ships has prompted the development of the port's tourism industry, where the Coastal Avenue is 16 blocks long and is the center of local and tourist life with restaurants and bars on the sand.

Another of the outstanding characteristics of this calm and friendly port is its extensive remote terminal, today the longest in Mexico, with a length responding the zone's geographic attributes, because the whole peninsula is settled on a limestone platform that gradually disappears, the pier must allow great ships to run aground.

Of dry and semi-warm climate, it registers a yearly average temperature of 79.3º F in the city, with the presence of cold winds from the north during November to April.

The tourism development of this great port with a population of 50 thousand residents has prompted the opening of new restaurants and hotels providing tourists excellent attention and service. You will also find a couple of gas stations, hospitals and medical centers, stores and foreign exchange, among other services.
