Demography of Tamaulipas
With a population of a little more than 3 million inhabitants according to the latest census dated at 2005, Tamaulipas is home to 2,9% of the national total. The state density reaches 34 persons per sq. kilometer; 87% of the total reside in urban areas; while as few as 4 municipalities concentrate 55% of the population: Reynosa, a border entity on the northern frontier at 17,4% , Matamoros at 15,2%, Nuevo Laredo at 12%, and the port entity of Tampico, which concentrates 10% of the total population in the state. This state is inhabited by a young society, where 55% of the citizens are under 30 years of age, equally distributed among genders. Also, men and women share life expectancy rates at an average age of 77 years. In terms of education, it enjoys standards slightly higher than the national averages, since illiteracy has been reduced to 5% for those over 15 years of age, average schooling reaches 8,7 years, and as much as 11% have earned a professional degree. While 87% of those living in Tamaulipas declare to follow the catholic faith, only 1% of those over 5 years of age speak an indigenous dialect, the most common of which is the nahuatl followed by the huatesco.
