The state density reaches 34 persons per sq. kilometer; 87% of the total reside in urban areas; while as few as 4 municipalities concentrate 55% of the population: Reynosa, a border entity on the northern frontier at 17,4% , Matamoros at 15,2%, Nuevo Laredo at 12%, and the port entity of Tampico, which concentrates 10% of the total population in the state. While 87% of those living in Tamaulipas declare to follow the catholic faith, only 1% of those over 5 years of age speak an indigenous dialect, the most common of which is the nahuatl followed by the huatesco.
