Politics of Tamaulipas

The industry of Tamaulipas is strong in the automobile and auto-parts sector, manufacturing and assembling for GM, Ford, Chrysler, BMW and Mercedes Benz. In the textile industry, the favorable conditions for producing synthetic fibers, harvesting cotton and the region’s water abundance are some of the factors that prompted important textile manufacturing companies to establish in Tamaulipas. Also in the electronic sector there has been the establishment of final device companies, producing televisions, telecommunications, radios and computers. The chemical and petrochemical producers search to consolidate the Tampico-Madero-Altamira group and start a new one in the Northeast of Tamaulipas, based on exploiting natural gas. Currently, the State of Tamaulipas has more than 30 facilities and produces 30% of the total chemical and petrochemicals of the country, as well as 80% of all thermoplastic resins, being a leader in the production of titanium dioxide. Agriculture spans over 1,574,193 hectares, representing 19.72% of the total state surface. Fishing in Tamaulipas has a significant potential with 420 km of coast for capturing catfish, shrimp, oysters, crab, trout, tilapia, red snapper and dogfish. Tamaulipas is a role model on energy issues for its transition towards the creation of clean energy, allowing it to eliminate 560 thousand tons of greenhouse effect gases per year with the first wind power park in San Fernando, turning the State into the first to produce this type of electricity destined to provide city governments and public entities. This park will operate 70 wind power towers with an electrical energy production that will enable the supply of all public buildings in the State, the facilities of Universidad Autonoma de Tamaulipas and all pubic hospitals and schools, water operation plants and the streetlights of its 43 municipalities. Tamaulipas consolidates as Mexico’s energy pillar because it also generates three times more electric energy than it uses and supplies one third of the natural gas extracted in the country.
