Politics of Colima

The Government of Colima has focused on strengthening sustainable social development based on the principles of justice, transparency, ethics and moral for each citizen to enjoy equal benefits. Diminish poverty and heighten the population’s quality of life in search of improving income levels, increase basic services, access to dignified housing, educational opportunities and health coverage. Consolidate competitive advantages implies reaching a productive system in favorable conditions for the development of projects l inked to the current technology such as electronics, biotechnology, telecommunications and the creation of new materials. Preserve the environment in order to achieve a sustainable order of ecosystems and biological diversity to avoid the environmental deterioration of the entity and safeguard the interests of future generations. Provide infrastructure and equipment to continue outstanding nationally for its social infrastructure coverage. The growing migration flows towards the entity will not affect these indicators negatively, which requires foreseeing those needs to guide the population’s growth so the public cost of services can be programmed and controlled. Achieve a territorial balance and regional integration for promoting development process through the active participation of the sectors committed to building territorial space and executing projects that create greater employment options, a productive development and the creation of infrastructure. Act efficiently to enforce the Law and build a society where conditions of judicial certainty guarantee the safety and integrity of Colima citizens within a frame of the Law’s application and update. The highway and road infrastructure of Colima grant it an excellent connection with other States, highlighting the roads Colima-Guadalajara, Manzanillo-Barra de Navidad and Colima-Morelia; besides the interstate highways such as Colima-Manzanillo, Colima-Armería and Colima-Tecomán. The State of Colima hast two airports: Aeropuerto Internacional Playa de Oro, located in Manzanillo and Aeropuerto Nacional Miguel de la Madrid Hurtado at Buenavista, a municipality of Cuahutémoc. The production sectors of Colima are outstanding for their progressive impulse and the passionate dedication of its citizens. In the primary sector, including agricultural, forestry and fishing activities, 1.2% of the economically active population is employed but it contributes 8.45% of the GDP. Beyond the quantitative impact of these numbers, Colima proudly produces almost half of the all of Mexico’s lemons and is the second nationwide tuna fishing entity. Mining is the secondary sector, employing 18.5% of the State’s population and generating 27.53% of the GDP in Colima. Half of this contribution to wealth belongs to the electricity, gas and water division. Mining contributes from the exploit of great ferrous deposits, such as Peña Colorada, the greatest in the country. Mining registered an average yearly growth rate of 6.93% between 1999 and 2003, greatly superior to the national average of those years (2.43%). The manufacturing industry represents 17% of the industrial production and half of this industry pertains to companies in the food, beverage and tobacco companies. Almost two thirds of the State GDP belong to the service industry, highlighting the transportation and storage activities, mainly linked to the Port of Manzanillo and the communication industry has taken advantage of the technological changes and law modifications to grow at two digit rates each year. An honorable mention goes to commerce, restaurant and hotel activities, where the businessmen creativity has made it possible to create a varied and high quality offer. The manufacturing industry represents 4.7% of the State’s GDP. A total of 2,007 economic units operate within the manufacturing industry. The most productive and dynamic activities within this industry are beverages, metallic structures, food preserves, cereal grinds, wood furniture, prints, editorials, cement, lime, plaster and dairy products.
